Malaysia ranks well in various categories on the 'Best in Asia' list

[MALAYSIA] From family-friendly attractions and scenic getaways to exceptional dining experiences, Malaysia offers a diverse range of travel options that cater to all kinds of explorers. This broad appeal has propelled Malaysia to the top of several Asia-focused categories in Trip.com’s “2025 Trip.Best Global Rankings”.

In total, Malaysia emerged as the best in 19 categories, spanning accommodations, attractions, nightlife, and more—highlighting the country's comprehensive tourism offerings. Several local establishments earned multiple accolades, further solidifying Malaysia's status as a leading travel destination.

This impressive performance reflects Malaysia’s rising popularity as a well-rounded travel hotspot, where rich cultural heritage, breathtaking nature, and modern conveniences converge. According to tourism experts, this success is fueled by continuous investments in tourism infrastructure and strategic promotional efforts that spotlight the nation’s distinct charm.

Among the standout destinations is the ever-popular island of Langkawi in Kedah, frequently acknowledged for its resorts, villas, and the Underwater World Langkawi. It was also ranked among “Asia’s Best Coastal Destinations”.

Joining Langkawi in this category is Semporna, a picturesque town on Sabah’s east coast, renowned as the launch point for diving adventures around Sipadan Island. Known for its unspoiled coral reefs and marine biodiversity, Semporna’s inclusion underscores its global appeal among eco-tourists and adventure enthusiasts.

Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, also featured in the “Best Destinations” list alongside Semporna, Langkawi, Melaka, and Kuala Lumpur. Unsurprisingly, Malaysia’s capital city KL continues to draw significant attention from both domestic and international travellers, with many of its attractions and eateries highlighted across several categories.

Melaka’s presence in the list reinforces its timeless appeal as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic city blends colonial charm with contemporary vibrancy—offering visitors a unique experience that ranges from iconic Dutch-era architecture to bustling night markets.

Top City Highlights

Kuala Lumpur stood out in several categories, including “Best Family-Friendly Destinations” (as the only Malaysian entry), “Best Nightlife (Bars)”, “Best Gourmet Hotels”, and “Best Things to Do”—the latter featuring landmarks like the PETRONAS Twin Towers, which was also named among “Asia’s Best Night Attractions”.

“It’s truly exciting to see Malaysian establishments recognised in so many categories in this year’s 2025 Trip.Best Global Rankings,” said Stephane Thong, General Manager of Trip.com Malaysia, in an official statement.

Thong highlighted how these accolades support the nation’s tourism vision ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026. The initiative aims to position Malaysia as a premier destination by showcasing its cultural richness, affordability, and renowned hospitality—all qualities that continue to resonate with global travellers.

From family-friendly accommodations and scenic resorts to culinary treasures and iconic landmarks, these recognitions reflect the depth and diversity of our travel experiences.

“We hope this not only encourages Malaysians to rediscover beloved local spots, but also inspires international tourists to explore what Malaysia has to offer—especially as we approach Visit Malaysia 2026,” Thong added.

Global Travel Trends Captured

Trip.Best is Trip.com’s signature annual collection of curated travel rankings, underpinned by AI-driven analysis that merges expert recommendations with real-time user data—such as reviews, ratings, and booking trends.

The methodology also accounts for emerging travel interests like sustainable tourism and digital nomad-friendly locations, ensuring the rankings stay in step with evolving traveller behaviours.

Beyond Asia, the rankings span worldwide highlights. Paris, Tokyo, and New York lead the “Global 100 Luxury Hotels” list, while cities such as Singapore, Paris, Bangkok, and New York dominate the fine dining categories.

Newly added categories such as Fall Views and Water Fun reflect seasonal interests like autumn foliage and aquatic adventures.

Family travel continues to flourish, with iconic destinations like Atlantis Sanya in China and Tokyo Disneyland in Japan named top “Global Family-Friendly Destinations”. Meanwhile, theme parks such as Walt Disney World (US), Universal Studios Japan, and Shanghai Disney Resort remain firm favourites in the “Global Best Things to Do” list.

Another standout feature is the “Destinations for the Months” guide, helping travellers plan seasonal getaways—from enjoying winter in Kyoto to spring blossoms in Seoul.
