"Parenting is inherently stressful, and when you're trying to stick to a parenting style that requires deep patience and self-regulation, it can feel overwhelming," says Dr. Jennifer Rottman, a psychologist who specializes in child development. “The constant pressure to succeed professionally and maintain an ideal family life can create a tension that makes it hard to be fully present and emotionally available.”

Gentle parenting demands patience, emotional regulation, and a commitment to setting boundaries without resorting to traditional forms of discipline like yelling or punishment. For parents dealing with high levels of stress and burnout, this can feel like an impossible standard to meet.

Cultural and Societal Expectations

In many societies, traditional parenting methods are still deeply ingrained, and expectations around children’s behavior often lean towards compliance and control. In these contexts, gentle parenting may be viewed as “soft” or even ineffective. Social norms and the constant presence of external opinions—from relatives to social media—can undermine parents' confidence in their choices.

"In some communities, there's a strong belief that children need to be disciplined through punishment to ensure they grow up well-behaved," explains parenting expert and author Dr. Susan Thompson. "This belief often clashes with gentle parenting’s core message of guiding children through their emotions. The lack of societal support makes it harder for parents to feel validated in their approach."

Parents may feel conflicted between their values and what is expected of them in their social or cultural environments, further complicating their efforts to embrace a gentle parenting philosophy.

Emotional Fatigue and Burnout

Another challenge for parents adopting gentle parenting is emotional fatigue. Unlike traditional disciplinary methods that might offer immediate results, gentle parenting often requires a long-term commitment to listening and understanding. This can be exhausting, particularly when parents are faced with behaviors that test their patience—such as tantrums or defiance in younger children.

“The emotional energy required to stay calm, especially in difficult moments, is often underestimated,” says Dr. Markham. “It takes a lot of effort to regulate your own emotions while trying to guide your child in doing the same. This is especially true for parents of toddlers or teenagers, who may be more prone to challenging behaviors as they test boundaries.”

In these instances, parents might feel disheartened when they don't see immediate results, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy or guilt. This cycle of emotional fatigue can cause some to abandon gentle parenting techniques altogether, opting for faster, less emotionally demanding forms of discipline.

Inconsistent Support Systems

A crucial factor in successfully practicing gentle parenting is having a supportive network of family members, friends, and communities who understand and reinforce the approach. However, many parents report a lack of consistency in the support they receive. When grandparents, schools, or daycare providers hold differing views on discipline, it can create confusion for both parents and children.

"Support from your broader community is key to making gentle parenting work," says Dr. Rottman. “When you're not on the same page with other caregivers, it can be difficult for your child to understand and internalize the lessons you're trying to teach.”

Without consistent messaging from all figures involved in a child's life, it becomes harder for the principles of gentle parenting to take root. Parents might feel isolated or even unsupported in their efforts, further contributing to the difficulties of sticking to this approach.

The Pressure of Perfection

Another common struggle for parents practicing gentle parenting is the idea that they must be perfect in their implementation of the approach. With social media and various parenting blogs offering an idealized version of gentle parenting, many parents feel pressure to maintain a flawless execution of the method. This can lead to feelings of shame when they falter, which contradicts the very core of gentle parenting, which encourages understanding and compassion—even for oneself.

“It’s important for parents to recognize that gentle parenting isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress,” says Dr. Thompson. “Every parent will experience moments of frustration or lapses in patience, but the goal is to approach those moments with compassion and a commitment to learning from them.”

While gentle parenting may be challenging for some, it is not without its rewards. Research suggests that children raised in environments where empathy and respect are emphasized tend to develop stronger emotional intelligence, better relationships, and greater resilience.

For parents, the key is to remember that gentle parenting is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and it’s okay to take it one step at a time. Building emotional connections with children, setting healthy boundaries, and learning to manage one's own emotions are all ongoing processes that require patience and self-compassion.

As more parents explore and embrace this approach, it’s crucial to continue to foster open discussions about its challenges and successes. Gentle parenting is not about achieving perfection—it's about fostering a deeper connection with children while navigating the complexities of modern life.
