Experts agree that with the right habits, skincare products, and lifestyle choices, it’s possible to keep skin looking youthful and vibrant for years to come. In this “Ask The Expert” edition, we speak to dermatologists and skincare professionals for their top tips on how to age gracefully while maintaining skin health.

As we age, our skin undergoes a variety of changes. The production of collagen, a protein responsible for skin's firmness and elasticity, decreases, leading to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, the skin's ability to retain moisture diminishes, causing it to appear drier and more prone to irritation. With age, pigment-producing cells also become less efficient, resulting in age spots or uneven skin tone.

"Although aging is inevitable, you can certainly take steps to slow the visible signs and keep your skin healthy," says Dr. Emily Stevens, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City.

Key Strategies for Healthy Skin Over Time

Hydration Is Key

One of the most important factors in keeping skin healthy is maintaining proper hydration. As we age, the skin’s ability to retain moisture decreases. To combat this, experts recommend using a good moisturizer twice daily, especially those containing hyaluronic acid, which helps retain moisture in the skin.

“Hydrating your skin is crucial in preserving its elasticity,” explains Dr. Stevens. “Look for moisturizers with ingredients like glycerin or ceramides, which help lock in moisture and repair the skin barrier.”

In addition to topical treatments, staying hydrated from the inside is essential. Drinking plenty of water and incorporating water-rich foods into your diet—like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges—can help maintain overall skin health.

Sun Protection: Your Skin’s Best Defense

Protecting your skin from the sun is one of the most effective ways to prevent premature aging. UV rays can accelerate the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and even skin cancer.

Dr. Rachel Adams, a dermatologist from Los Angeles, emphasizes the importance of wearing sunscreen every day, regardless of the weather. “Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate your skin. Make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30,” she advises.

For added protection, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and seeking shade during peak sun hours can further minimize sun exposure.

Skincare Ingredients to Look For

With a vast array of skincare products available, it’s important to choose those that target specific aging concerns. The following ingredients have been proven to help keep skin youthful and vibrant:

Retinoids: Retinol, the over-the-counter version of retinoid, encourages cell turnover, which helps smooth fine lines and improve skin texture. “Retinoids are excellent for stimulating collagen production and reducing the appearance of wrinkles,” says Dr. Adams.

Vitamin C: Known for its antioxidant properties, Vitamin C helps protect skin from free radical damage while brightening and even-toning skin.

Peptides: These amino acid chains help repair damaged skin and boost collagen production, making them an essential part of an anti-aging skincare routine.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Found in many exfoliating products, AHAs help remove dead skin cells and promote skin renewal, resulting in a smoother and more radiant complexion.

Diet and Lifestyle Choices Matter

What you put into your body can have just as much of an impact on your skin as what you put on it. Dr. Stevens highlights the importance of a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and vitamins.

“Foods like berries, nuts, avocados, and leafy greens are full of nutrients that support skin health,” she explains. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish like salmon and in flaxseeds, help maintain the skin’s moisture barrier, while Vitamin E from almonds can reduce inflammation and prevent damage from environmental stressors.

It’s also important to minimize habits that can harm your skin, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and poor sleep. Smoking accelerates the breakdown of collagen, while alcohol dehydrates the skin. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night to allow the skin to repair itself.

Regular Skin Care Routine

Consistency is key when it comes to maintaining healthy skin. Experts recommend a simple, effective skincare routine that includes cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen. Stick to a routine that works for your skin type, and avoid switching products too frequently, as this can irritate the skin.

In addition to at-home skincare, consider seeing a dermatologist for professional treatments, such as chemical peels, microneedling, or laser therapy, which can help reduce wrinkles and promote collagen production.

Aging doesn’t have to mean saying goodbye to healthy, radiant skin. By following a few simple practices—like staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen daily, using effective skincare ingredients, eating a nutrient-rich diet, and sticking to a consistent routine—you can help your skin age gracefully while keeping it vibrant and youthful. Remember that taking care of your skin is not only about appearance but also about maintaining its health and function as you get older.

“Healthy skin is a reflection of overall well-being,” Dr. Stevens concludes. “Prioritize skincare as part of your self-care routine, and your skin will thank you for it in the long run.”
