Iran's covert efforts to undermine Trump's presidential bid, say U.S. spy agencies

  • Tehran is employing disinformation and social media manipulation to undermine Trump's 2024 presidential bid.
  • Iran aims to avoid a U.S. administration that would escalate tensions, following actions like the assassination of General Soleimani.
  • Russia also poses a significant threat to the U.S. election, with sophisticated influence operations supporting Trump and targeting his opponents.

In a recent revelation, U.S. intelligence agencies have disclosed that Iran is actively working to influence the outcome of the 2024 presidential election, specifically aiming to undermine former President Donald Trump's candidacy. This covert campaign involves a variety of disinformation tactics and social media manipulation designed to sway American voters and create discord.

According to an official from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), Tehran's leaders are likely motivated by a desire to avoid a U.S. administration that they believe would escalate tensions with Iran. "The U.S. intelligence community has observed Tehran working to influence the presidential election, probably because Iranian leaders want to avoid an outcome they perceive would increase tensions with the United States," the ODNI stated.

Iran's Covert Activities

Iran's influence operations are multifaceted, involving covert social media accounts and related activities aimed at spreading disinformation. These efforts are reminiscent of Iran's actions during the 2020 election when it conducted a multi-pronged covert influence campaign to undermine Trump's reelection prospects.

An ODNI official noted, "Iran is utilizing vast webs of online personas and propaganda mills to spread disinformation," highlighting the sophisticated nature of Tehran's operations. These activities are not limited to online disinformation; U.S. authorities have also uncovered intelligence suggesting Iran's involvement in more direct threats, including an alleged assassination plot against Trump.

Broader Foreign Influence

Iran is not the only foreign actor accused of meddling in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Russia remains a significant threat, with intelligence reports indicating that Moscow is employing a range of influence operations to support Trump and discredit his opponents. "Russia remains the predominant threat to U.S. elections," the ODNI stated, noting that Russia's tactics have grown more sophisticated since the 2016 election.

Iran's Denial

In response to these allegations, Iran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations has denied any intentions or activities aimed at influencing U.S. elections. "Iran does not engage in any objectives or activities intended to influence the U.S. election," the mission stated, dismissing the accusations as psychological operations designed to influence the election narrative.

Historical Context and Motivations

The strained relationship between the U.S. and Iran has been a significant factor in Tehran's motivations. As president, Trump ordered the killing of top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani and withdrew from a multilateral deal aimed at curbing Tehran's nuclear program. These actions have fueled Iran's desire for revenge and its efforts to influence U.S. politics.

The revelations about Iran's covert campaign to undermine Trump's candidacy underscore the ongoing challenges of foreign interference in U.S. elections. As the 2024 presidential race heats up, the U.S. intelligence community remains vigilant, monitoring and countering these influence operations to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
