  • The first electric motorcycle battery swop station in Singapore will be operational at a Shell petrol kiosk by August 2024.
  • The initiative is a collaboration between Cycle & Carriage and Gogoro, aiming to enhance the EV infrastructure and promote sustainable transportation.
  • Positive feedback from a pilot program with foodpanda has paved the way for the commercial launch of Gogoro's battery-swapping technology in Singapore.

The future of sustainable transportation in Singapore is taking a significant leap forward with the introduction of the first electric motorcycle battery swop station at a Shell petrol kiosk, scheduled to be operational in August 2024. This pioneering initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between Cycle & Carriage (C&C) and Gogoro, a Taiwanese firm renowned for its innovative battery-swapping technology.

A Strategic Partnership for Green Mobility

Cycle & Carriage, an established name in the automotive industry, has been appointed as the exclusive distributor for Gogoro's battery-swapping systems and electric scooters in Singapore. This collaboration aims to revolutionize the local EV market by providing a convenient and efficient solution for electric motorcycle riders.

The first battery swop station will be located at 158 Yio Chu Kang Road, with plans to expand the network in collaboration with Shell Recharge. "The positive feedback from foodpanda riders and valuable data gained from the sandbox pilot have given us confidence to commercialize Gogoro products in Singapore," said Wilfrid Foo, Managing Director of C&C Singapore.

How Battery Swapping Works

Gogoro's battery-swapping network allows users to pick up fully charged batteries at designated locations and exchange them for drained ones. This system significantly reduces the downtime associated with charging electric vehicles, making it a practical solution for urban commuters. Each battery swap enables riders to travel up to 100 kilometers, providing ample range for daily commutes.

Environmental Impact

The implementation of battery-swapping stations is not just about convenience; it's also a step towards reducing carbon emissions. Gogoro estimates that its electric refueling solution has already avoided more than 1 million tonnes of CO2 emissions globally. As Singapore aims to reduce its carbon footprint, initiatives like these are crucial for achieving environmental sustainability goals.

Pilot Program Success

The decision to roll out the battery-swapping stations follows a successful pilot program conducted in partnership with foodpanda. Riders who participated in the pilot reported high satisfaction, praising the ease of swapping batteries and the smooth riding experience. This positive feedback has been instrumental in moving forward with the commercial launch of Gogoro's products in Singapore.

Future Expansion Plans

Beyond the initial station at Yio Chu Kang Road, C&C and Shell Recharge plan to establish additional GoStations across the island. These stations will not only cater to individual riders but also support commercial fleets, further promoting the adoption of electric motorcycles. By the fourth quarter of 2024, C&C aims to introduce three Gogoro EV models, enhancing the options available to consumers.

The launch of the first electric motorcycle battery swop station at a Shell petrol kiosk in August 2024 marks a significant milestone in Singapore's journey towards sustainable transportation. This initiative, driven by the collaboration between Cycle & Carriage and Gogoro, promises to enhance the EV infrastructure, reduce carbon emissions, and provide a convenient solution for electric motorcycle riders. As Singapore continues to embrace green mobility, the future looks promising for the nation's EV market.
