  • Avoid exposing your smartphone to direct sunlight to prevent overheating.
  • Use protective cases and waterproof pouches to shield your device from sand and water.
  • If your phone gets wet, turn it off immediately and dry it in a well-ventilated area, avoiding rice and heat sources.

Summer is a time for fun in the sun, but it can also be a challenging season for your smartphone. Between the scorching heat, sandy beaches, and splashes of water, your device faces numerous hazards. Here’s how to keep your smartphone safe and functional all summer long.

Smartphones are particularly vulnerable to high temperatures. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause your device to overheat, leading to potential damage to the battery, screen, and internal components. It’s crucial to avoid exposing your smartphone to too much sunlight. If your device heats up, place it in the shade or a cool place for a few minutes and remove its protective cover to help it cool down faster.

To prevent overheating, switch off unnecessary features like WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS when not in use. If your phone continues to overheat, turn it off and let it cool down before using it again. Most modern smartphones have built-in mechanisms to shut down when they reach unsafe temperatures, but it’s always better to be proactive.

Smartphones and Sand

The beach is a popular summer destination, but it’s also a risky environment for your smartphone. Sand can easily scratch your screen and infiltrate ports, causing internal damage. The Star recommends using a case and a protective film on your display to shield your device from sand. When not in use, store your smartphone in a waterproof pouch or a zip-lock freezer bag to keep it safe from sand and water.

If your smartphone does come into contact with sand, gently wipe it with clean water and a soft cloth. Avoid using compressed air, as it can push sand further into the device.

Water Risks

While many smartphones are marketed as water-resistant, it’s important to remember that this feature is designed for accidental exposure, not prolonged submersion. Saltwater and chlorine can be particularly damaging. If your phone falls into water, turn it off immediately and place it in a dry, well-ventilated area. The Star advises against using rice to dry out your phone, as small particles can get inside and cause further damage.

Instead, gently tap your phone with the connector at the bottom to expel water and wipe it with a paper towel or soft cloth. Avoid using a hairdryer or microwave, as these can cause additional harm.

Additional Tips to Keep Your Smartphone Cool

Avoid Pocket Storage: On hot days, your body heat can exacerbate the problem. Use a bag instead.

Charge Smartly: Remove the case while charging and avoid covering your phone with anything that can trap heat.

Use Airplane Mode: When playing games or using energy-intensive apps, switch to airplane mode to reduce heat generation.

Don’t Leave Your Phone in the Car: Cars can become extremely hot in the sun, which can be detrimental to your device.

By following these tips, you can enjoy your summer without worrying about your smartphone. Keep it cool, protected from sand, and safe from water to ensure it stays in top condition.
