Meta to train AI on public EU posts

  • Meta will begin using public Facebook and Instagram posts from adult users in the European Union to train its AI models, including Meta AI and Llama.
  • The company will notify users and offer an opt-out form, but privacy groups argue this does not meet GDPR’s consent standards.
  • Meta’s move has drawn criticism from advocacy group NOYB and faces potential legal challenges across multiple EU countries.

[EUROPE] Meta Platforms has announced plans to utilize publicly available content from adult users in the European Union to train its artificial intelligence models. This move follows a previous delay due to privacy concerns and aims to enhance the performance of Meta's AI systems, including the Llama large language model and the Meta AI assistant.

Meta's decision to incorporate public posts, comments, and interactions with its AI assistant into its training datasets is driven by the need to better reflect the diverse languages, cultures, and regional nuances of European users. The company argues that training its AI models on European data will improve their ability to understand and generate content that resonates with local audiences.

Previously, Meta's rollout of AI tools in Europe was delayed after the Irish Data Protection Commission advised the company to pause its plans due to concerns over compliance with the EU's stringent data protection regulations. The commission's intervention highlighted the need for greater transparency and user control over personal data.

Privacy Measures and User Consent

In response to regulatory concerns, Meta has outlined several measures to ensure user privacy and compliance with EU laws. The company will notify EU users across Facebook and Instagram about the types of data being collected and provide them with the option to object via a dedicated form. Importantly, data from private messages and accounts of users under 18 will be excluded from AI training.

Despite these safeguards, some privacy advocates have criticized Meta's approach. Max Schrems, founder of the advocacy group NOYB, has argued that Meta's reliance on an opt-out system places the burden on users to protect their data, rather than obtaining explicit consent. NOYB has filed complaints with 11 national privacy watchdogs across Europe, urging them to halt Meta's AI training plans.

Industry Context and Comparisons

Meta's initiative aligns with similar efforts by other tech giants to leverage user data for AI development. Companies like Google and OpenAI have also used European user data to train their AI models, prompting scrutiny from regulators concerned about data privacy and protection.

The European Commission has yet to comment on Meta's new approach, but the ongoing investigations into AI practices by companies like X (formerly Twitter) and Alphabet indicate a broader regulatory focus on how tech firms handle EU user data in training their AI systems.

Meta's decision to use public posts and AI interactions to train its models in the EU marks a significant development in the intersection of artificial intelligence and data privacy. While the company has implemented measures to address privacy concerns, the effectiveness of these safeguards and the broader implications for user rights and regulatory oversight remain subjects of ongoing debate.
