  • OpenAI has acquired Jony Ive’s AI hardware startup io for $6.5 billion, marking its largest acquisition to date.
  • Ive will become OpenAI’s creative head while continuing to run his design firm, LoveFrom, which will collaborate on AI hardware projects.
  • The partnership aims to develop AI-native consumer devices, with the first product expected in 2026.

[WORLD] OpenAI has announced the acquisition of io, an AI hardware startup founded by renowned designer Sir Jony Ive, in a landmark deal valued at $6.5 billion. This acquisition marks OpenAI’s largest to date and signifies its strategic expansion into the consumer hardware market.

Strategic Expansion into Hardware

The acquisition consolidates OpenAI’s earlier 23% stake in io, bringing the total investment to 100%. The move underscores OpenAI's commitment to integrating advanced hardware with its AI software, aiming to create innovative devices that redefine user interaction with artificial intelligence.

Jony Ive, known for his pivotal role in designing iconic Apple products such as the iPhone and iMac, will assume creative and design responsibilities across OpenAI's operations. However, he will not become a full-time employee; instead, he will continue to lead his independent design firm, LoveFrom, which will collaborate closely with OpenAI on future projects.

A Vision for AI-First Devices

The collaboration between OpenAI and io is driven by a shared vision to develop AI-native devices that go beyond traditional smartphones. The first product from this partnership is expected to launch in 2026, though specific details remain under wraps. Both Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Jony Ive have emphasized the goal of creating devices that offer a more natural and intuitive user experience, moving away from the limitations of current touchscreen interfaces.

This partnership follows a series of strategic moves by OpenAI to establish a greater presence in consumer-facing products. In 2023, OpenAI launched ChatGPT on mobile platforms with voice capabilities, which quickly gained millions of users. The success of that rollout, combined with growing interest in AI-integrated personal assistants, laid the groundwork for a deeper investment in hardware innovation. The acquisition of io is widely seen as a continuation of this trajectory, aimed at bridging the gap between software and form factor.

Sources close to the project suggest the new device could feature a voice-first interface powered by OpenAI’s latest multimodal models, allowing for conversational interaction without the need for screens or traditional input methods. While unconfirmed, this aligns with previous comments by Altman, who has expressed interest in moving away from screen-dominated computing environments toward more ambient, assistive technologies.

Assembling a World-Class Team

The io team, comprising 55 engineers and designers, will join OpenAI to work on this new initiative. Notable members include Tang Tan and Evans Hankey, both former Apple executives who have previously collaborated with Ive on various projects. Their expertise is expected to play a crucial role in the development of the upcoming AI hardware products.

Industry insiders have also noted the potential impact on the broader competitive landscape. With Apple doubling down on its own AI initiatives and Google integrating generative AI across its Pixel line, OpenAI’s foray into hardware may pressure rivals to rethink their own design strategies. The added design pedigree from Jony Ive could give OpenAI a distinctive edge, blending elegant physical design with cutting-edge AI.

Industry Reactions and Market Impact

The announcement has garnered significant attention in the tech industry. Apple's stock experienced a slight dip following the news, reflecting investor concerns over increased competition in the AI hardware space. Analysts suggest that the collaboration between OpenAI and Jony Ive could potentially disrupt the current market dynamics, challenging established players like Apple and Google.

Looking Ahead

As OpenAI ventures into the realm of consumer hardware, the integration of advanced AI capabilities with innovative design principles is poised to set new standards in the industry. The forthcoming product lineup, developed under the creative direction of Jony Ive and his team, is anticipated to offer users a seamless and immersive AI experience, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of intelligent devices.
