The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore is embarking on an exciting journey to transform the historic Kallang Airport into a vibrant lifestyle and recreational hub. This initiative is part of a broader vision to rejuvenate the Kallang River area, blending heritage conservation with modern amenities to create a unique community space.

Opened in 1937, Kallang Airport was Singapore's first purpose-built civil airport. Although it ceased operations in 1955, the iconic building has continued to serve various community functions over the years. Now, the URA is seeking public input to reimagine this landmark as a dynamic precinct that caters to both locals and tourists.

A Blend of Heritage and Modernity

The former Kallang Airport building, located at 9 Stadium Link along Nicoll Highway, is an architectural gem that has been gazetted for conservation. The URA envisions this site as a new lifestyle precinct by the edge of the city, integrating sports, leisure, and community activities. According to the URA, "The conserved old Kallang Airport area will first be made available for a variety of sports, leisure, and community uses".

Community-Centric Development

Public engagement is at the heart of this redevelopment project. The URA has launched a series of exhibitions and feedback sessions to gather ideas from the community. These sessions aim to ensure that the new precinct meets the needs and aspirations of Singaporeans. "We want your ideas on how we can make these places more inclusive and vibrant," the URA stated.

Enhancing Connectivity and Accessibility

One of the key aspects of the redevelopment plan is to improve connectivity around the Kallang River. The URA plans to introduce new walking and cycling paths, making it easier for residents to navigate the area. This includes a new underpass at Kallang Bahru and a walking and cycling bridge over the PIE, designed with a comfortable gradient for all users.

Recreational and Sports Facilities

The Kallang Alive precinct, part of the broader Kallang River rejuvenation project, is set to become a world-class destination for sports, leisure, and entertainment. The area will feature a new indoor arena, various sports facilities, and community spaces. The Kallang Football Hub and the Singapore Tennis Centre are among the key highlights, offering state-of-the-art facilities for both professional athletes and the general public.

A Vision for the Future

The transformation of Kallang Airport is not just about preserving a historical site; it's about creating a space that fosters community spirit and enhances the quality of life for residents. The URA's vision includes a mixed-use lifestyle hub that seamlessly integrates public and private housing, commercial spaces, and recreational facilities. This holistic approach aims to build a vibrant community along the Kallang River, connecting people, places, and memories.
