  • His impressive track record in international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games and Asian Para Games, highlights his exceptional talent and hard work.
  • As Toh prepares for his second Paralympic bid at Paris 2024, he remains focused on securing a medal, driven by his past experiences and unwavering dedication.

Toh Wei Soong, a name synonymous with resilience and excellence in Singaporean sports, is gearing up for his second Paralympic bid at Paris 2024. The 25-year-old swimmer, who competes in the S7 classification, has set his sights on clinching a medal, a goal that has eluded him by the narrowest of margins in previous competitions.

Early Life and Challenges

Born on September 11, 1998, Toh Wei Soong's journey to becoming a top-tier para-athlete is nothing short of inspirational. At the tender age of two, Toh was diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a rare neurological condition that caused inflammation of his spinal cord, affecting his lower nervous system. Despite this significant challenge, Toh's determination and passion for swimming propelled him into the competitive arena at the age of 14.

Rising Through the Ranks

Toh's early swimming career was marked by rapid success. He won his first international medal, a silver, at the 2013 Asian Youth Para Games in Kuala Lumpur. This was just the beginning of a series of remarkable achievements. At the 2015 ASEAN Para Games held in Singapore, Toh bagged three gold medals and one silver, establishing himself as a formidable competitor.

International Success

Toh's prowess in the pool continued to shine on the global stage. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, he made history by winning a bronze medal in the Men's 50 metre freestyle S7 event, becoming the first para-swimmer from Singapore to achieve this feat. His success didn't stop there; he went on to win two gold medals and a bronze at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Tokyo 2020 and Beyond

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics saw Toh narrowly miss out on a medal, finishing fourth in the S7 50 metre Butterfly final, just 0.16 seconds shy of the bronze. Despite the disappointment, Toh's performance was a testament to his skill and determination. He also competed in the S7 50 metre Freestyle and S7 400 metre Freestyle finals, finishing seventh in both events.

Preparing for Paris 2024

As Toh prepares for the Paris 2024 Paralympics, he is more determined than ever to secure a medal. "I have learned a lot from my previous experiences, and I am focused on improving my performance," Toh said in a recent interview. His training regimen, under the guidance of coach Ang Peng Siong, a former Singaporean Olympic swimmer, is rigorous and tailored to enhance his strengths and address his weaknesses.

Academic and Personal Life

Balancing his athletic career with academics, Toh is currently studying at the National University of Singapore in the University Scholars Programme. His ability to excel both in the pool and in his studies is a testament to his discipline and time management skills.

Inspirational Figure

Toh Wei Soong's journey is a source of inspiration for many. His resilience in the face of adversity and his relentless pursuit of excellence serve as a powerful reminder that with determination and hard work, anything is possible. As he heads to Paris 2024, the hopes of a nation rest on his shoulders, and his story continues to inspire future generations of athletes.
